Following is a video of a presentation, "6 Ways That Mushrooms Can Save The World", given by Paul Stamets at the 2008 TED Conference.

Pitching In
Fungi Perfecti recently teamed up with Bay Area eco-alliance matteroftrust.org to conduct an experiment in the mycoremediation of oil-contaminated substrates, generated as a byproduct of the cleanup efforts surrounding the recent Cosco Busan oil spill in San Francisco Bay.

"The roots of mushrooms, called mycelium, produce enzymes that unlock wood fibers, which are composed of strings of carbon-hydrogen molecules in the form of cellulose and lignin. Similarly oil and most petroleum products are held together by these same molecular bonds. The mushroom mycelium breaks these bonds, and then re-constructs the oil into carbohydrates, fungal sugars, that make up the mushroom's physical structures."

–Paul Stamets

A Note About Mycotechnology
for Visitors to fungi.com

The sciences of mycofiltration, mycoremediation, mycoforestry and MycorestorationSM are part of an emerging field of study. While fungi promise to play an invaluable role in repairing many forms of environmental damage, the parameters, techniques and time lines for implementation are still in development.

Fungi Perfecti is involved in a number of trials, both at our facility and elsewhere, to evaluate and refine these practices. We will provide updates regarding these trials at both our Web site and in appropriate scientific and technical journals as details become available.

At this time, it is not possible for us to offer consultation or support for projects being conducted by third parties. Many factors—among them time constraints, liability issues and questions of intellectual property rights—prevent us from being able to do so. We hope to offer these services at some point in the future as the technology becomes more refined.

For those who are interested in this exciting new field, we suggest you educate yourself in the science of mycology and mycelial propagation to give you a base of experience upon which you can expand. The books Mycelium Running, Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms and The Mushroom Cultivator are an excellent start. You might also consider attending one of our Stamets Mushroom Cultivation Seminars, and our MycorestorationSM Seminars.

If you are interested in observing some of these principles at home, you can perform small experiments of your own using many of our mushroom products. You can use our "Espresso Oyster" Mushroom Patch™ to practice mycoremediation, breaking down paper products, food and yard waste and many other materials. A bed of Garden Giant™ mushrooms can be established in runoff areas to test the principle of mycofiltration. You can experiment with mycoforestry using our Plug Spawn to more quickly break down fallen trees and return them to the ecosystem. And our MycoGrow™ mycorrhizal fungus products can be used to experiment with MycorestorationSM, replenishing the beneficial fungi in your soils, enhancing plant growth, reducing erosion and stabilizing slopes and soil beds.

We will continue to post new developments in the field of Mycotechnology to our Web site, so be sure the check back often.
